Seriously pretty citrus.
I took Ina's recipe for her Orange Chocolate Chunk Cake and used blood oranges instead. Here's the recipe.
After baking, a mixture of orange juice and sugar is heated and brushed/poured over the cake.
When cooled, a ganache of semi-sweet chips, heavy cream and instant coffee (I used instant espresso powder) is poured on top.
I heart Ina Garten.
And her cake!
And her cake!
From Barefoot Contessa Parties! book (2001). You can find the recipe for the Bundt cake here or the mini-cakes here (this recipe from the Food Network is basically 1/2 the Bundt cake recipe).
mmmmm. that looks awfully good! i have to make this asap! i just got some lovely blood oranges the other day. they're so wonderfully tart and delicious!
ReplyDeleteThat chocolate ganache looks so amazing! I've never had a blood orange but I'm seeing them in recipes everywhere lately. I need to check my store for them!
ReplyDeleteI love that woman so much, it aches in my soul just to think about her. Le sigh.
ReplyDeleteThat cake looks so very delicious. I love blood oranges but I think that they must be harder to get on the east coast because I haven't seen any. I'll have to content myself by looking at your pictures.
ReplyDeleteI heart Ina Garten too! And that orange chocolate chunk cake is a winner! Love the hue of blood orange...
ReplyDeletei heart ina garten, too! so classy and always so calm :)

ReplyDeleteI am making the cran-zuc muffins today and I found another bag of cranberries hiding out in my freezer!
That is one perfect looking cake! What a great idea to use blood oranges. Also, your drizzle is just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI haven't had lunch yet, can I come over for a slice? This looks so good!
ReplyDeleteSince blood oranges aren't very sweet, did you have to adjust the sugar in this recipe?
I have yet to try a Barefoot Contessa recipe I don't love.. this seems like no exception.
ReplyDeleteThe blood orange/chocolate combo sounds wonderful!
I love the orange-chocolate combination of flavors. This cake looks so rich and yummy!
ReplyDeleteLooks really good! The ganache...ooo...yum yum!
ReplyDeleteThat looks scrumptious!!
ReplyDeletei'm an Ina devotee as well. made her decadent pecan squares the other day, and now i think a blood orange chocolate chunk cake is needed... your blog is fabulous and would love if you popped in to my new one some time!

Ina is my fav. I love how she's not super skinny. it makes me trust her recipes more
ReplyDeleteYeeeehoo! That's looks super; no wonder you heart Ina! LOL
ReplyDeleteEverything she does always turns great!
A major good looking cake, Mary!
This sounds AMAZING. I love chocolate, I LOVE blood oranges, I love cake...sign me up! I have never found really great blood oranges here in LA, where did you get yours?
ReplyDeleteMonica H - I didn't change anything from orange to blood orange. The syrup has enough sugar in it so I didn't think it needed more.
ReplyDeleteLiz - I picked these up at Trader Joe's in the orange bag. I've had a lot of weekend commitments so I haven't been to the farmers markets lately. Good luck finding them before the season's over!
That is a lovely cake. Perfect for a ladies' lunch!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds fabulous. I love oranges, I love chocolate. Does using blood oranges give it a lighter orange profile than otherwise?
ReplyDeleteThat looks really beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHoly Cow, that looks stunning and achingly good!
ReplyDeletei love that you love a good bundt! i love ina garten too...!
ReplyDeleteOh my, that cake is gorgeous!! The ganache is stunning!! I can't wait to try this one!
ReplyDeleteWOW! This bundt cake looks AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! Fed Ex a slice of this, too, please.
ReplyDeleteoh this is awesome! i love a good endorsement for an Ina recipe. I mean, so many are good, but when someone really backs them up as you have here, it's very encouraging. this looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteThis cake IS delicious....I've made it before, but with regular navel oranges...those blood oranges are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHah you weren't lying about loving bundts! :P
ReplyDeleteI am craving blood oranges now! This cake looks delicious, however I have to admit that blood oranges are the best fresh-squeezed in a margarita. It is out of this world and blood oranges are nowhere to be found in KY.
ReplyDeleteYum. Blood oranges give the best zest and orange flavor in baking. I copied this recipe and will make it. I also use blood orange zest in biscotti for a low fat delish cookie to dunk into my tea. Hummmmmmmmm, I'm off to the store to find blood oranges!Dana Zia

Next time try coating your bundt pan with butter and granulated sugar (instead of flour). I works like a charm in the old cast aluminum bundt pans.
ReplyDeleteI made this a few days ago, and it was spectacular! Thanks for posting it. Mmmm.
ReplyDeleteThis blood oranges cake looks so beautiful with the colors, I'm sure it'll be a big hit with the kids! Nice colors! Although I'm to a big fan of chocolate chunk bundt cake, this sure looks yummy! I'm normally the one that will say no to orange chocolate chunk bundt cake.
ReplyDeleteOh my word! I came across this post via tastespotting and baked the cake and it is to die for! So so so good! Definitely now one of my top 5 cakes! Thanks for sharing this!!!
ReplyDeleteI have not really come across blood oranges. Must try and get some cos my mouth is watering just by looking at that yummy cake.
