Devils Food White Out Cake
Whew! Getting this one done right under the wire. I was busy this weekend (two movies: Shopaholic - enjoyable but no Bridget Jones; The International - bad but Clive Owen is worth my $13.50 at the Arclight; day trip to UC Santa Barbara to visit my friend's daughter - can't believe little Emily is in college!!) However, I was also the Michael Phelp's of the sport of napping and lounging (sans his extracurricular stupid activities). I think I was horizontal for a whole day with a down comforter, warm cat and the DVR remote control firmly in my grip (it was r.a.i.n.i.n.g. really hard in Los Angeles and the place and its people just shut down!)
Thanks Stephanie of Confessions of a City Eater for picking the Cover Cake: Devils Food White Out Cake on page 247 of Dorie's book, Baking: From My Home to Yours.
I made half the recipe and used little 4" cake pans. I didn't have success with the frosting (my eggs got curdled, my syrup practically caramelized, and it was just a disaster). I ended up making a 7-minute frosting instead, but do want to try Dorie's recipe again!
Two layers are split and one of the layers is crumbled and placed around the cake.
Have a great week everyone! I'm going to start earlier on next week's recipe so I'm not stressing so much!!! :) Be sure to check out the other Tuesdays with Dorie bakers!
P.S. How perfect is this cake? Today, Feb 17th, is my cat's 13th birthday! Q-Tip is black & white...and my cake matches my cat! Happy Birthday Q-Tip!
Your cake is so perfect! It turned out just beautifully!
ReplyDeleteYour mini cakes turned out so cute! I think that is a great way to make them so you can just nibble a bit and indulge without as much guilt!
ReplyDeleteI love your mini version! I really need to get some 4 inch pans.. if I could find them first!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, that looks amazing!! I can't wait to try it~!
ReplyDeleteI love the mini cake. And I really need to try 7-minute frosting--I've never made it. Actually, I'm not sure I've ever eaten it, either. Sounds like you had a relaxing weekend--I'm jealous. =) And happy birthday to Q-tip!
ReplyDeleteI love you mini cake! I put this one off too long as well and am not going to get to it this week. I have made it in the past, though, and it's delicious!
ReplyDeleteOh, and happy birthday q-tip! :)
Love the minis! I ruined my 4 inch pan by puttingit in the dishwasher - ooops!
ReplyDeleteGreat job - and happy birthday kitty!
love the mini cake! :) Cute cat too! Happy birthday kitty!
ReplyDeleteThat is such an adorable cake! The frosting messed with me a little. I'd stick to the one you know and love.
ReplyDeleteYou got way more done on this rainy weekend than I did! It was the perfect time for staying in and baking which I should have done, but lucky for me, I can drool over your pictures.
ReplyDeleteOh, we were icing twins! My syrup was just going to light amber when I poured it into the egg whites, which proceeded to curdle in big lumps. I figured out part of my problem with reading Dori's very unclear instructions: I was supposed to start the beating on low when the syrup is heating then begin beating it at a high speed when the syrup reaches 235. Oh! Anyway your 7-minute frosting looks fantastic, and the mini is adorable!!
ReplyDeleteNancy
your mini cake looks absolutely fabulous. I love the lighting in your photos.
ReplyDeleteperfect birthday cake!
I would have never guessed this was a mini cake.. oh it looks so chic and divine, the topping ... that is pretty darn awesome.
ReplyDeleteI like how you accessorized your cat with your cake. Genius! Happy bday kitty. ;)
ReplyDeleteI made a rectangular cake instead. It turned out well.
Love the mini cake idea.
Happy birthday to Q-tip!! He does match that cake perfectly!! Your minicake looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteYou've been busy! I must say though that your day spent under the comforter with the remote sounds like a dream come true for me!! Oh, what I would give for a whole day with the TV and no one home! Sigh...someday! :o) I also want to try the frosting again, as I refuse to be beaten by a frosting. Love the mini cake!
ReplyDeleteoh, how totally sweet and cute and delicious!
ReplyDeletei'm curious about the shopoholic movie (i've actually published an article on the book series:). as a bridget jones fan, i don't think anything can compare...
i'm glad you enjoyed a relaxing weekend!
Happy birthday to Q-tip! It's such a cute name for your cat :P
ReplyDeleteThe cake looks immaculately perfect, btw. Looks just like on the cover!
Your cake looks wonderful. Sounds like you had a great weekend. There's nothing better than being warm and watching fun tv all day when it's raining outside. Happy Birthday Q-Tip! (I love that picture.)
ReplyDeleteI love that you made mini cakes. I love anything in miniature.
ReplyDeleteWe seem to have matching cats - my Boo Radley looks exactly like Q-tip. :)

Your cake does match your sweet little cat! Sounds like you had the perfect weekend, and this cake topped it off. Love your mini cakes. Dorie's frosting was quite the adventure; I will probably make a different one next time I make this cake -- the seven minute frosting sounds awesome.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I can't wait to see Shopaholic!
I'm so glad to hear you say the International is a bad movie and now I will not waste my money on it. I'm not a big Clive fan anyway. Your cake is adorable and perfect!!
ReplyDeleteWow those photos are so gorgeous, I am DROOLING!
ReplyDeleteWow those photos are so gorgeous, I am DROOLING!
ReplyDeleteI love the picture with just the frosting in between the layers. I could eat it just like that and be perfectly happy.
ReplyDeleteI love your mini cake and your cat! I didn't try the frosting, just made a cream cheese frosting and really liked it. I know what you mean about the rain in SoCal, we get it so seldom that you feel the need to take advantage of it!
ReplyDeleteAw how perfect! B&W cake for your B&W cat! Wow he's old too! My cat is 15! Old cats are awesome! :D
ReplyDeleteCute little cake and cute cat! Did you wave when you went through Ventura? ;)
ReplyDeleteYou cake is beautiful. So is the matching kitty!
ReplyDeleteHappy B-day to your Kitty! I love your cake!! Nice job!!
ReplyDeleteI love the mini-cakes! They're so cute!
ReplyDeletehappy birthday to Q-tip! too bad cats can't (or shouldn't) eat cake, cuz that's one perfect white-out!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a giant oreo cookie!!! I want it! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd how perfect are your pictures! I didn't bake along this week because there was too much of a time gap between when I could bake and when I could share the cake...but ooh I wish I had thought of making a 4-inch cake. I would have chanced being home alone with that one!
ReplyDeleteI did a seven minute frosting as well - and it turned out really great!
ReplyDeleteI tried to go see Shopaholic last weekend, but got stuck going to Mall Cop instead. Boooorrrrriiiinnnggg.
What a beautiful cake, well done! Your cat is gorgeous, looks just like my old cat.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Q-tip! And thats a yummy looking cake...
ReplyDeleteI love the cute little cake. I've got to miniaturize more things for TWD!
ReplyDeletenice adjustment and making the 7 minute frosting...i love mini cakes, a yours looks very adorable!
ReplyDeleteBTW, the arclight rocks --- its the only place my hubby and I see movies now (gotta love the reserved seating).
Happy B-D Q-tip! He looks just like my little 9 month old, Maps!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, you did a great job with the cake. Looks just like the photo. I've been meaning to try the white out cake too. The frosting's that evil Italian meringue one isn't it. Hmm...
ReplyDeleteOh, your cake looks perfect! I've never tried 7 minute frosting, but it sure looks tasty.
ReplyDeleteP.S. my mom's birthday is also Feb. 17. I'm sure she'd be happy to know she share her special day with such a pretty little kitty.
Wow... I love the idea of a mini cake and the frosting looks like a cloud! I've eyed this recipe many times (after all, it is hard to miss on the cover of the cookbook) and now I know I must make it. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteLove the mini. Great job.
ReplyDeleteI love those mini-cakes!
ReplyDeleteNice save with the 7 min frosting - my frosting looked curdled with crystallized sugar, but it all whipped out in the end - phew! It looks perfectly delicious though, so great job!
ReplyDeleteI looked through your archives to see if you had made this cake. Agnes gave me the book for my birthday (a fabulous gift!) and my son and I decided this was going to be the first recipe we tried. It's amazing. I have always had trouble baking cakes but this turned out absolutely perfect. The frosting turned out as well although I don't find it to taste a lot like marshmallow (and I've made homemade marshmallows). I can't wait to take it to lunch with Agnes and the kids tomorrow!
