The end of SFAD! Summer Fruits are here!
I know, I know.
I live in Los Angeles.
I have absolutely no right to complain about anything weather or season related.
However, I also don't know when seasons happen. I just got back from DC and everything was green and flowers were blooming after a season of "brown, brown, brown" (says my ex-pat Los Angeles friend). We don't get huge notices like that here.
My sign of summer? One word. STONE FRUIT! (okay, two words).
My heart skipped a beat when I went to the Farmer's Market and found apricots, white peaches, cherries and even more perfect California strawberries! Whoo hoo!
If I lived anyplace else, I know that I would suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Here in Southern Cal, I do get something similar: Summer Fruit Affective Disorder or SFAD :) I live for my stone fruit season!!
California strawberries, apricots, white peaches, cherries! And some baby bok choy and Chinese broccoli in the back! Serious yum!
I don't know what I'm going to bake with these...they might just get washed and eaten! But I wanted to share the end of my SFAD! And I hope these fruits come to your area or backyard soon! :)
I know! I was so excited when I saw cherries for the first time last week.
ReplyDeleteI think I always eat fruit straight when it comes into season and then when I get bored of eating it plain I bake with it.
Those look divine! I love watching as different types of produce come back into season after a long winter.
ReplyDeleteI just got the most marvelous cherries at farmer's market last week and devoured them (and paid with a belly ache). Next time, I'll bake with them instead. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI KNOW I KNOW I KNOW!!!!! I ate my cherries at the market, right out of the little brown paper bag. It's like the whole world is singing with joy.
ReplyDeletewhat a nice photo! Summer fruit looks so nice and its delicious :)
ReplyDeleteIt is the middle of May and I am still wearing a sweater in New York :(
ReplyDeleteSummer fruits are the best!!! I can't wait for the basket of peaches.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait until these make it to the Midwest!
ReplyDeleteOhh I'm so jealous! I'm just starting to see cherries, peaches and nectarines. Can't wait until there are more!
ReplyDeleteOMGOSH! I have this too! Cherries are the love of my life. I've been having withdrawals. Now begins the time of yer when I eat about 6 lbs of cherries DAILY and not much else.
ReplyDeleteSummer fruit is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteDidn't see the peaches but gorged myself on cherries last night. I "popped" them in ice water (put them in a big bowl full of cold water and ice, then put that in the refrigerator) and then climbed into bed after dinner with a HUGE bowl of cherries and a movie on my laptop. Bliss!
ReplyDeleteAt this point in the season, I feel so starved for this type of fruit that I would just wash and eat it, as is, but I"m sure you'll come up with something awesome!
ReplyDeleteSFAD -- I love it! I, too, am spoiled by the California fruit. We have lots of fruit trees in our own yard, so I'm doubly spoiled. But it'll still be at least a month or two before the peaches and plums are ready. Your pictures? Are making me hungry :)
ReplyDeleteYay for stone fruit!!! I can't wait to see what you make with all of this glorious fruit. YUM!
ReplyDeleteThat is a fabulous array of perfect fruit. OoohLaLa. I couldn't bear to bake them. I would just have to eat them out of hand. That is always a huge problem for me because I always think of things to make and then I just want to eat them fresh. Darn. Enjoy
ReplyDeleteooo so jealous! I can't wait till the first batch of Jersey Strawberries arrive!
ReplyDeletefruits always are my favour food..
ReplyDeletewe do also have various picks here...but too bad we dont have cheeries or strawberries picking here..>"<
I have the same condition, I just love stone fruit, its like candy. Why is it called stone fruit btw?
ReplyDeleteFor the past 10 years I have been living outside of California in places that have definite seasons. It has been very weird to be back here where there aren't very many seasonal "indicators"! But yes, I look forward to stone fruits with eager anticipation too. YUM!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you --- I love this time of year!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful arrangement of fruit... looks lovely and yummy!
ReplyDeleteJealous, jealous, jealous! When I saw your post, from somewhere in the back of my brain came a commercial jingle from the 80s, probably from the California Fruit Growers or something..."Summer summer fruit, it wouldn't be summer without it..." I have quite a few of these socked away in my brain, sadly...
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty pictures of the fruit. Yes, we So Cal folks are spoiled rotten. April is one of my favorite months since that is when the strawberries arrive. Yum! Now on to the cherries!
ReplyDeleteI am so green with envy right now. KY has great vegetables but the fruit is a little sad here. We're getting fresh strawberries in a couple of weeks and the watermelon and blackberries are really fabulous here but that's about it for summer fruits. Everything else (peaches, cherries, blueberries, etc.) comes from somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to live vicariously through you!
Oh.. not fair... stop it, just stop it NOW! I must not look any further.. or I will turn green with envy!
ReplyDeletedelicious fruits for summer since its summer hot season
