Cidney the Girl Dog
Cidney was adopted from the County of Los Angeles Animal Shelter and my cousin was sooo lucky to find a perfect match. She was about one years old when she was adopted and will be four-ish in October of this year.
Okay, Dog People. Please help me and my cousin out. What do you think she is...we know there is a a combo of many breeds - definitely part golden retriever...but what else? Her mix is what makes her a sweetie!
Some things you might want to know:
We know she is part Farrah Fawsett. Dude, look at all that hair that seems to be everywhere in the house. Unbelievable how much hair she has. I need to brush her with a plastic bag in one hand to collect all the hair that comes off. She has these feathers off her legs that are totally pretty when brushed out.
She often gets a pedi-pedi to tame some of the feet hair. It gets trimmed so that she doesn't drag in as much dirt.
Her temperament is amazing. She hardly barks. Really. Months will go by before I hear a bark out of her. If she is with other dogs though, she will join in the barking. If there is another dog on the walk, she'll make a excited whimpering noise, but not bark. And she let's us dress her up. Enough said...totally mellow.
You know those Navy SEAL dogs or agility doggies that are way, way AP test 5 scoring smart? Um, Cidney is more sweet than rocket scientist. Sometimes, she has a hard time realizing that when she goes on the other side of a pole when on a leash, we'll get stuck. Once, we were jogging on the beach and she went on the other side of the parking meter (she was behind me) and then we just whip-lashed ourselves when the leash wrapped around the pole. Of course, a paramedic truck was sitting there and the hot first responders saw the whole thing and laughed as we untangled ourselves. Sigh.
She's not food motivated. We used to have a big box of dog bones in an open box on the floor and she wouldn't bother it. She just loves, loves, loves walks. It's her favorite thing in the whole wide world. My instagram is filled with photos of us at the beach or on walks.
She has to be part retriever because she loves to carry toys in her mouth. All the time. And she has a bunch of them.
So, your thoughts would be fun to hear. What breeds do you think are within Cidney?
(by the way, we aren't going to do the DNA testing. Cidney's vet doesn't even believe it as she got back very different results at two different labs...besides that money is better spend on more toys and food! :) THANKS for the help! - mary
I'm guessing she has a bit of border collie (or some such) in her. And definitely a LOT of golden retriever.
ReplyDeleteMy sweet girl (who went on to the big park romp in the sky in May) was probably part chow, part lab, part pitbull and part raccoon.
Longtime reader, first time commenter. :) (What can I say... I'm a sucker for cute pet posts!)
ReplyDeleteNo question, she's definitely part Golden Retriever, and if I had to hazard a guess as to the rest of her background, I'd put in a vote for Springer Spaniel - that could explain her freckly nose, the paler patches around her face and the feathery legs.
I don't know much about dogs, just wanted to say that she looks like a sweetie! Beautiful dog.
ReplyDeleteShe looks very much like my friend's dog who is part Golden Retriever and part Great Pyrenees.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet face!
ReplyDeleteI see a lot of Golden Retriever with a bit of a shepherd mix in her. Part of the fun of having a mutt is trying to guess which trait is from which breed.
I agree with Isabelle..... Golden Retriever/Spaniel
ReplyDeleteand also with Connie..... 100% beautiful sweet girl dog ♥
The Sweetie Pie is most definitely part Finnish Spitz.
ReplyDeleteSuper golden...maybe some sweet hound? The hounds on the east coast are so gentle. Maybe golden and....all American? The toys, hair, and lovely attitude are all golden. Shepherd? And really, she's just a perfect dog. Like my jiggin buddy, the pit hound lab something that keeps me and the kids safe and entertained. Just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI love the story regarding the jogging incident. I already made my guesses on your instagram, but it was too cute not to comment. Whenever I make a fool out of myself, there is some some of universal law in place that mandates attractive people must be present to bear witness. She is also ridiculously photogenic!
ReplyDeleteTo get technical, the white pattern she exhibits is called the "Irish Spotting Pattern," but that doesn't give us a lot of insight into her breed because so many breeds carry the gene for the white express. Spaniels, Border Collies, Aussies, Boston Terriers, etc. all have that white gene. She could even be secretly heterozygous piebald depending on her white, which is an indicator for ton of other breeds as well. (for nerdy info: http://www.doggenetics.co.uk/white.htm)
I agree that genetic testing is pretty silly, we once had a 10lbs dog in our office that the paperwork came back as half great dane. The blood tests that look for genetic problems and inheritable conditions that are linked to genes are usually more accurate because there are certain quirks and diseases that are linked to breeds, but to me it is just more fun to guess!
Gosh she's a pretty girl. I'd have to say definitely golden and either springer spaniel or perhaps australian shephard. I had a springer/golden mix, and she got the rounded backside and bobtail of a springer and the beautiful coat and face of the golden but still had some spots and a spotted muzzle too. I still miss her, she was a rescue we got as an older girl.
ReplyDeleteShe looks like a blonde border collie! :-) So pretty...does she have any herding tendencies? My border collie (mix) is a big time cuddler, and that hair reminds me of our dog (we have our dog groomed short b/c of the nasty Louisiana heat).
ReplyDeleteI posted a link to this page on twitter for my fellow dog lovers, and for your amusement, here is a compilation:
ReplyDeleteI would say part Springer Spaniel (nose spots) and/or Border Collie (length of coat). Maybe Great Pyrenees if bigger.
ohhhhhhhhh she is so cute!!!!
Golden/Border Collie
I agree with golden. I left that out because they said it was a given ;)
Yeah...or a Lab. But a retriever it is. Plus, the snout&ears are bit Collie
definitely part Collie also maybe Australian Shepherd, what a beautiful dog!
I thought springer because of the spots.
Or a blue merrill collie/shepherd...*sigh*
I vote part golden retriever and part English setter -- my dad's had English setters for 30 years and the tails, feathers, and spots really remind me of a setter. I agree on the retriever part, especially if she likes carrying toys around -- though my dad had one setter who always had something in her mouth, especially when people came to the door. Setters are also very narrow in the hips.
ReplyDeleteEither way, she is absolutely beautiful and I can tell she's a sweetheart. And lucky to have such a good mommy!!
Cidney the girl dog looks like she could be my dog's big sister. Same coloring, same hair, and even a similar beautiful face. Whatever else she may be, she definitely has some Great Pyrenees in her. From what I can see from your pictures, she has those funny little extra claws on her back paws that are called dew claws, which are a trademark of the Great Pyrenees breed. My dog, Tucker, is a Great Pyr and Beagle mix, and people mistake him for a Golden Retriever mix all the time because of his pretty coat. Normally Great Pyrenees are massive dogs (80-100 lb.), but Great Pyr mixes can be smaller, often around Cidney's size. Cheers to such a pretty lady dog! :)
