Mother's Cookies...no more!
Monday, October 13, 2008
When I heard that Northern California based Mother's Cookies closed its doors after over 90 years of cookie making, I was so sad. Mother's Cookies have been with me my whole life. I remember them at snack time in school, and lots of cookies during my undergrad years at UCLA. Sure, they won't be confused with Sherry Yard's creation, but damn, those nonpareil sprinkles had me at "hello." My favorite were the Circus Animals so I went out and picked up a couple bags when I heard the news.
Here is an article from the San Francisco Chronicle (Oct 9, 2008): Mother's Cookies abruptly shut down.

Wow really?! That is so crazy. And sad.

I have been lurking reading your posts for a while, but just had to say that picture of you and your brother is absolutely the cutest thing I've ever seen! Absolutely adorable!!!
Now, I need to go back and read further on the cookie sadness. I'm in a state of disbelief!
That is such a cute picture of you! It's funny, I think many of us from a certain generation have Olin Mills-type photos in our albums. I was sad when I heard this news too. My favorite was the Taffy Sandwich cookies. I ate those all through high school, which explains why I was 15 pounds heavier back then.
The other company, Archway cookies, shut down last week in the next town over and people are devastated. NOt only for the loss of jobs, but where will they get their cookie fix from now on?
Its very sad news, those are yummy cookies I remember eating since way back. Hopefully someone will come to the rescue.
noooooo!! I love these cookies. My heart is broken.
i too have been eating these since i was a child. since moving to the east coast, my annual trip back to california consisted of getting my fill of in-and-out burgers and stocking up on mothers cookies. truly, a VERY sad time but also brings back wonderful childhood memories.
that pic of you and your bro...too adorable!!!
I've been in mourning...i loved those cookies. As a kid, I only ate the pink ones, as I insisted that they tasted better than the white ones (I know, I was a total dork)
oh my goodness! that brings back so many memories! aw, that makes me really sad. that is a supercute picture though :]
Hey! I think my sister and I had the same background and shag carpeting counter-top in one of our photos together. Circa 1973! Shhh!! Don't tell anyone how OLD I am! :o)
Noooooo Waaaayyyyyy!!!!! These are so my favorite. Oh my I think I need to run to the grocery store and get me some, forget the diet:)
Mary! How absolutely adorable are YOU!!! You haven't changed a bit...still cute as ever. I love that photo.
oooh your kid pic is so cute. the waxy sweet and sprinkle-crunch taste of the mother's cookie i will always remember, trips with my family to san francisco we'd always look forward to these crazy cookies. great blog, thanks for sharing!
