Kugelhopf with Dried Blueberries

For this week's Tuesdays with Dorie, Yolanda of The All-Purpose Girl selected Kugelhopf. You can find the recipe on Yolanda's site or on pages 61-63 of Dorie's book: Baking: From My Home to Yours.

The brioche-like batter went through the motions...and there was lots of motions. I can't imagine making this without the KitchenAid mixer (and I know there are some TWD bakers who did! My arms are off to you!) When you have to let the dough mix for 10 minutes, my machine was shaking more than the wall clock in a honeymoon suite.

I began Sunday afternoon and felt like I was slapping dough for hours on end. In order to bring this into work, I set the alarm for 2:30 am so I could pop it into the pan and let it go through the final rise. As I was padding through the dark house, I came to really appreciate bakers and the time they spend making bread! Went back to bed and woke up to a nicely risen dough! A quick pop in the oven and voila! Kugelhopf!

I didn't have a Kugelhopf pan (just can't add more hardware to the shelves) so I used my pretty Bundt pan. It presents a mean lemon cake (here) and pound cake (here).

I followed Dorie's recipe but subbed dried blueberries for the raisins. Recently, the nice folks at Oh Nuts! offered me some dried fruits and nuts, and they sent me some delicious dried blueberries, pine & mac nuts. They are really glorious. I have lots of plans for these ingredients and will write more about them soon! Be sure to check out Oh Nuts! - they have several storefronts in New York but offer everything yummy through mail order.

It's gorgeous - and looks like it has the perfect crumb! I liked this - in spite of the challenges in making it. I watched that ATK episode where they made the lemon cake; good to know it was as good as it looked on TV. (With all my bundt pans, I need more bundt cake recipes!) And that apple and pear buckle...ooh. I'm making THAT asap.

Wow! Yours looks perfect! The dried blueberries sound like a nice addition. My mixer was hopping around like crazy too so I just stopped it before any damage would occur.

My grandmother used to make us a cake very similar to this one. We have never been able to duplicate it but I might give this one a try

Did you say 230AM?? I think *I am* a morning person but dang thats too darn early for me. Hats off to you girl. Your kugelhopf looks perfect. Love the blueberries. Great job!

I agree, this is one of those recipes that makes me glad I have a stand mixer! Your kugelhopf looks delicious--cool pan, too. I've gotten up early to bake for work, but never at 2:30! =)

That bundt pan is so nice and tall and beautiful - it's perfect for the kugelhopf. Yours looks amazing, and I am beyond impressed that you got up in the night for the second rise. Now, that's dedication!

EGAD!!! 2:30. I thought 5 was dedicated. Looks like it was good. I almost used dried blueberries, but wasn't sure if they would work so used cranberries. Thanks! NOw I know they do. Very Nice! Love your bundt. Is it Christmas trees!

What a beautiful Kugelhopf! I was reading Reinhart's bread book, Crust and Crumb, and he makes a comment that this is a great bread to have on hand when company drops by. How's could this possibly be a bread to just have on hand? My hat is off to you for getting up at 2:30 to get the dough rising.

How funny! When I saw that you made this with blueberries, I thought of my own gift from Oh! Nuts and then I got to the part where you mentioned where you got yours. They are delicious and so great in baked goods. I like them plain too. Your kugelhopf looks absolutely stunning. That really is a beautiful bundt pan.

Wasn't it fun cleaning bundt pans after unsticking the Kugelhopf? Although yours looks beautiful mine wasn't a great success. Loved it toasted with jam the next day. Good stuff.
