Caramel Crunch Bars
Caramel Crunch Bars

Caramel Crunch Bars
For this week's Tuesdays with Dorie selection, Whitney of What’s left on the table? chose Caramel Crunch Bars, page 112-113 of Dorie's book, Baking: From My Home to Yours.

There are few things I've never seen on the baking aisle in Los Angeles: Heath Toffee Bits and Cinnamon Chips. Not saying they aren't here (see below)...but I don't remember coming across them. I was contemplating making my own English toffee bits for this recipe...

Caramel Crunch Bars
Sunday: Visiting my friend Helen. I was washing the dishes after lunch, telling her about my toffee bit dilemma, and mentally planning out when we should go to Menchie's for kosher frozen yogurt sold by the ounce (I, of course, love the little mochi balls). Anyway, all of a sudden, I look up and Helen has a package of Heath Toffee Bits in her hands! She bought them during the holidays...and knew where they were in the cabinets! Thanks Helen!

Caramel Crunch Bars
I thought these were good, but really, really, super, duper sweet. A wee bit sweet for me...but enjoyed at work.

Caramel Crunch Bars
Thanks again Helen for the toffee bits! I'm going to make the recipe on the back of the package for oatmeal and toffee bit cookies...and bring you and the girls some!

In Dorie's book, she sandwiches these with ice cream to make a beautiful sandwich. Be sure to check out the other Tuesdays with Dorie bakers and get the recipe from Whitney's blog or Dorie's great book. Next week, fun with prunes! :)

Gorgeous! Love the triangles, too!

How cool that your friend had those! I had trouble with the ice cream sandwiches, too hard to eat! Mine were delicious but very crisp. I ended up using a dark chocolate on the top and they still were all gobbled up. If I had used milk chocolate I don't think they would have lasted until the next day!

I LOVE that you cut them into triangles. Now...why didn't I think of that! I can never find the cinnamon chips, either. I did have a ton of Toffee chips left over from the holidays, so that was not a problem. Nice pics, Mary!

your bars look totally awesome. Mine were a bit undercooked I think. Not crunchy at all and too buttery.

The bars look perfect! The recipe was among the first few that caught my attention when I got the book, but after seeing your post, I know I definitely must give it a try the soonest!

Mary, your bars look gorgeous! I'm so mad my dough is still in the freezer.

I love how you cut your bars! They just look beautiful in your pictures! I too, thought they were a bit sweet for my tastes, but thankfully the family liked them.

Oh Mary - your stuff always looks perfect - and although these weren't your favorite, I'm glad you liked them.

Humpf... those were hard enough as it was to cut straight... and you went all out and made triangles???

You over-achiever, you! LOL

Very pretty (and courageous!), Mary!!!

Ive been seeing these today around the bolgosphere. They sure look damned tasty. They are so pretty, perfect edges!

Gorgeous pictures as always! The triangles are great. I have never used toffee bits before either but have seen them in stores. Cinnamon chips, on the other other hand, are nowhere to be found. Glad your friend could help out with the toffee bits!

These look fantastic! I love you've cut them into triangles :)

These look delicious. We use toasted nuts to top these instead of toffee. Helps cut down on the sweetness.

Food glorious food!

I love how you cut them into diagonal shapes.

Are you sure you're not a fashion designer in disguise?

Your bars look absolutely gorgeous. Perfect. I've seen heath toffee bits in the LA area, but not cinnamon chips.

Great looking bars! The toffee bits tend to be seasonal out here.

Mary, Good point on the cinnamon chips --- would also check Cost Plus (if you haven't done so already). I went recently, and they had Guittard cappucino and mint chips (on sale to boot), so would imagine that they would carry cinnamon chips.

Loved how you cut the bars --- they look fantastic!!!

The sweeter the better! I'll take your leftovers, please?!

That first picture is awesome. I love how dark your chocolate looks. I used milk chocolate on top but this looks better.

Great photo! And as for next week, I love prunes, and am really looking forward to making that cake!

Love the triangles! I tasted the dough and it was not very sweet, but the finished product really made up the difference. How lucky that you came into a bag of toffee bits. And I'm sure these will be a hit with everyone.

Your bars look lovely. I loved the toffee, good save by your friend. I had to buy heath bars and shave off the chocolate to get my toffee.

The only place I've seen Heath toffee bits in L.A. has been Gelsons.

I like the way you cut your bars. And how funny that your friend had just what you needed for these. =)

Wow, Heath? I've heard of the candy bar, I had no idea they made nibs for cooking? I wonder if it would sustain a plane ride over to Japan?

So fun for Helen to pitch in with the toffee bits. :) Glad they turned out so well!
