Sweet Potato (not) Pumpkin Biscuits - Tuesdays with Dorie
Tuesday, October 20, 2009
For this week's Tuesdays with Dorie selection, Erin of Prudence Pennywise selected Sweet Potato Biscuits, page 26 of Dorie's book, Baking: From My Home to Yours. Be sure to check out Erin's blog...it is lively and fun!
I messed up and ATE my sweet potato. Yes, I ate it! I had baked some up for a Bundt and wasn't thinking when I was seduced by the fall scent of fresh yams/sweet potatoes (I forgot which ones I purchased!) and ate the remaining sweet potato.
So, I used leftover canned pumpkin instead. I made 1/4 of this recipe.
They were easy to make, but I think I should have added more sweetness to the mix. Dorie's recipe uses canned sweet potatoes, but I was going to use fresh. Since sweet potato is sweeter than pumpkin (as the name implies...hee hee), I should have added more sugar.
I didn't have a biscuit cuter and since I'm pretty square, I made them in my likeness. Yes, nerd biscuits by someone who ate her ingredient.
I'll have to try these again with the proper ingredients and cutting utensils. In the meantime, why don't you go visit some fellow Tuesdays with Dorie bakers and see how they made out?
And if you have time, visit the rest of my blog for my crazy baking adventure. I cannot lie. I Like Big Bundts and am making 30 Bundt cakes leading up to National Bundt Day, November 15th. Today, I'm posting a Sweet Potato Bundt from Paula Deen!

So cute! I would've eaten them, too. I love sweet potatoes. Your biscuits still look like they turned out well, though!
Potato - Pumpkin - Whatever. They look absolutely delicious! And I'm definitely using the rest of my sweet potato on that bundt recipe.
Your biscuits look perfect! We loved them. I might have to make them again with pumpkin, maybe I will have better results with the height.
I love the square shape. Your biscuits look nice and fluffy. Great job.
Haha love the story. These look like they came out great anyway. Just like biscuits should be!
Your biscuits are so not nerdy!!!
They look great, even if they aren't quite what you intended. =) I may make these with pumpkin as well.
I like the color and the look of the square in these! You got a much better rise than did I. I tried twice, not sure what to try next. Maybe making pumpkin or making them square! Laughed out loud when I read that you ate your main ingredient by accident. Too funny!
With so many bundt cakes in your life, no wonder you forgot that the sweet potato had another purpose. Your biscuit looks great!
I'm glad the pumpkin worked out well. I love your "I like Big Bundts" - hilarious!
I would eat the sweet potatoes too! HA! I love that stuff.
I also love your pumpkin biscuits.
btw your bundt cakes cannot be surpassed. You are Queen Bundt Cake of the World!
Very cute, and I love your big bundts ideas!
They look great! I bet pumpkin would've been perfect, too!!

I used pumpkin too. I actually had sweet potatoes, but I ate them too. I was going to save it for this, but they were just too tempting. Plus, it was nice to get rid of the frozen pumpkin I had left over in the freezer. Your biscuits look perfect! I like them square... so much easier to cut and no scraps.
I made pumpkin ones, too. (Also sweet potato) I actually like the pumpkin ones better--but maybe it's because I drizzled those with a cinnamon glaze. I'd read on the P&Q's that Dorie suggested if you use pumpkin to add more sugar, so I did. But you are right.
Yours look great and I love the squares!
Fiew! I almost missed yours... hidden behind your big bundts!!!
It would have been a shame for they really look super flaky! WOW... what a success. I wonder if it could be attributed to the pumkin switch... but oh! no, I know it's because you are an amazing baker! eh! eh!
Your biscuits look fantastic! You got great rise. I would definitely like to try these with pumpkin and when I do, I'll follow your trip to add a bit more sugar!
The orange is so vibrant! I always love the way colors resound in your creations and photos. The use of sweet potatoes really ups the nutritional status of the original buttermilk biscuit.
I don't like biscuits but when i look these collection its looks perfect.... and i feel hunger..
I'm so impressed that you're keeping up with TWD along with your bundt-fest. Pumpkin sounds like a fine sub.
Your biscuits look perfect. I would love to try them with pumpkin. I would so gobble up a roasted sweet potato just sitting around.
